According to the latest data provided by Alphaliner, at this stage, MSC remains by far the largest liner company in the world by container capacity, followed by Maersk, then CMA CGM Lines and COSCO Shipping. The top five container shipping giants collectively control 16.9 million TEUs, or 64.2% of global capacity.

Just last January, MSC surpassed Maersk to become the largest liner company. Currently, MSC boasts a total capacity of 4.6 million TEUs, representing 17.5% of the global capacity as a whole. The fleet of MSC consists of 714 vessels - among which 413 (with a capacity of 2 million TEUs) are owned and the remaining 301 (equipped with a capacity of 2.5 million TEUs) are leased.

According to the data, MSC's backlog accounts for 37.6% of its current fleet capacity, comprising 124 vessels with a combined TEU capacity of 1.7 million.
Maersk, which ranks second, has a total capacity of 4.23 million TEUs, or 16.1% of the global total. Its fleet consists of 707 vessels, of which 345 (2.5 million TEUs) are owned and 362 (1.7 million TEUs) are leased.
According to Alphaliner, Maersk currently has only 31 vessels on order with a total capacity of 376,400 TEUs, representing just 8.9% of its existing capacity.
CMA CGM ranked third globally with a total fleet of 595 vessels (equivalent to 3.4 million TEUs), representing approximately 12.9% of the world's overall container capacity. Additionally, this French company has placed orders for an additional 81 ships, which will contribute a capacity of 689,300 TEUs upon completion, accounting for around 20% of its existing capacity.

COSCO Shipping ranked fourth globally with 2.87 million TEUs, representing a market share of 10.9%. Hapag-Lloyd followed closely behind in fifth place with 1.78 million TEUs and a market share of 6.8%.
