More than $330 million in losses! The burning ship has finally "stalled" ?
A cargo ship carrying around 3,000 vehicles caught fire off the Dutch coast, killing one person and injuring several others.
It is understood that the fire is in Panama registered cargo ship "Fremantle Avenue", the cargo ship length of 199 meters, is a 6220 car transport ship built by Imaji Shipbuilding in Japan, delivered in 2013, the final destination of the cargo ship is Singapore.
After burning for a full week, the fire on the Fremantle Avenue car carrier was finally temporarily extinguished, destroying nearly 4,000 new vehicles on board and causing an initial estimate of more than $330 million in cargo damage.
Accident restore :
At the time of the incident, the ro-Ro ship named "Fremantle Avenue" was leaving the port of Bremerhaven in Germany to Port Said in Egypt, when the fire broke out while sailing through the sea near the Dutch island of Ameland.
According to Japan's Kawasaki Steamship, which is responsible for the shipment, the ship was carrying 3,783 vehicles, of which 498 were electric vehicles; The crew consisted of 23 people, all from India.
Around the cause of the fire, many public opinion speculation or related to the fire on the ship's electric vehicle lithium battery, more Dutch media quoted rescue workers on the phone recording said, "the fire is triggered by the battery of an electric vehicle," but the Dutch coast Guard responsible for rescue operations stressed that "the cause of the fire is unknown so far."
The fire burned out after a week:
On the afternoon of August 1, a spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Water Management said there was no indication that the fire on board was still spreading, but that it could start again.
Inspection results from the salvage team showed that the situation on board "remains stable" and that the section of the ship below the waterline "remains intact" and is not listing.
On the afternoon of 30 July, Fremantle Avenue was towed by two tugboats at a speed of about 3 knots to a temporary anchorage some 16 kilometres north of the islands of Shimonik and Amran, arriving on 31 July.
As of now, Fremantle Avenue remains in temporary anchorage while crews from Multraship and Smit Salvage board the vessel for initial inspections.
As a precaution, Rijkswaterstaat's fuel spill treatment vessel, MS Arca, patrols the vicinity and has yet to detect any signs of oil contamination.
At present, Rijkswaterstaat is working on a plan to tow the ship to port, but the final port to receive the Fremantle Avenue is yet to be determined.
The fire caused heavy damage:
Patrick Anderson, an economist at the Aderson Economic Group, said the fire could cost more than $330 million in lost goods.
He pointed out that after several days of fire, all the cars seemed to be a total loss, it was difficult to rescue any vehicles from it, and vehicles that had been damaged by fire and water damage could not be sold as new cars.
There is the latest news about the car boat accident on Fremantle Avenue. Spokesmen for Ford, Stellantis, Renault and Nissan said none of their vehicles were on board.
Toyota said it was unlikely to carry cargo on the vessel. A Volkswagen spokesman said the company was actively investigating but could not provide further information. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
It is understood that the new cars were loaded in Germany and shipped to Singapore via the Suez Canal. At present, BMW says that there are hundreds of BMW and MINI cars on board. Mercedes confirmed that there are about 300 Mercedes cars.
Safety of cars and boats:
In response to the safe transportation of car boats, experts said that the aforementioned burning boat was built in 2013, when there were not many electric vehicles on the market, and it is speculated that the ship may only have the fire protection facilities of general fuel vehicles, without considering the fire protection design of electric vehicles.
However, in the auto boats built in recent years, especially those customized by some new energy auto companies, the fire protection of electric vehicles has been taken into account, and the dual fire protection design of ultra-fine dry powder and water curtain with better fire extinguishing effect has been adopted.
The ship is equipped with a high-definition camera to fully monitor the vehicle, once the fire is found, you can open the dry powder for automatic fire extinguishing, and use water curtain spray to cut off the fire source, which can be effectively controlled under normal circumstances and improve the safety factor.
In the use of electric vehicles, the battery management system BMS is mainly used to ensure the safety of power batteries. In the working process of the power battery, the BMS monitors or calculates a series of related parameters such as voltage, temperature, working current, and battery power in real time.
It can prevent the power battery overcharge or overdischarge, overheating and other safety risks, and through the internal measurement sensor collected by a single cell voltage and temperature value changes, real-time monitoring of the high voltage system insulation status is normal.
Therefore, improving the design level of the battery management system is crucial to improving the safety factor of electric vehicles and cannot be ignored.
