MSC has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Alitalia cargo carrier AlisCargo Airlines with the aim of acquiring full ownership of the company, which is expected to be completed in early 2024. AlisCargo Airlines will also take delivery of a Boeing 777 freighter during this period.

MSC said the deal will strengthen its air cargo solutions capabilities. Like rivals Maersk and CMA CGM, shipping Air is complementary to MSC's core container shipping business, with the company operating two aircraft managed by Atlas Air Worldwide between Europe, Central America and Asia, and adding two new aircraft over the next six months. Once the transaction is completed, MSC Air Cargo will have a fleet of five wide-body aircraft.

Back in November, MSC abandoned plans to buy ITA, when it made a proposal with Lufthansa to buy ITA, which was rejected by Italian authorities. Maersk took a big step in the air cargo space by launching Air cargo in the spring of 2022 and completing the acquisition of German air freight forwarder Senator later that year. In addition to its own freighter fleet, CMA CGM also holds a 9% stake in Air France/KLM.
